Ingrown Toenail
An ingrown toenail occurs when the nail edge grows into the skin on one or both sides of the nail and can become infected. It is caused by:
- Hereditary
- Repeated pressure on toes (shoes, support hose)
- Cutting nails incorrectly
- Specula left along the nail fold
Symptoms:
- Red, swollen, warm and painful area
- Open area with pus formation if infected
Management:
- Remove specula
- Conservative nail clipping
- BS Brace
- Advise client on proper fitting shoes
- If it is infected refer client to a medical professional
If the client does not change their footwear they will continue to get ingrown nails
