Involuted Toenail

An involuted nail is excessive curvature of the nail. It is caused by

  • Wearing shoes that are too narrow
  • Compression stockings
  • If one pronates a lot, it puts pressure on the toe (pushing the nail into the fold)

Symptoms:

  • Red and inflamed in the nail folds (if infected)
  • Often painful due to the presence of calluses or corns in nail fold
  • May lead to ingrown toenails due to curvature of nail

Management:

  • BS Brace application
  • Trimming the sides of the nail and removing the specula (piece of nail left in nail fold)
  • Wearing proper fitting shoes
